Cave Spring House
Cave Springs, Georgia Family Home
While traveling and selling my paintings and prints, I have had a number of people commission me to paint an acrylic painting of their home or sometimes an old family homestead they may have grown up in, as a child.
This painting was for a young couple who lived locally from the local show that was located along Cedar Creek, in Cave Springs, Georgia.

Krispy Kreme Atlanta
Krispy Kreme
Atlanta, GA
I exhibited at one of the largest and highest rated Festivals in the nation, “The Yellow Daisy Arts & Craft Festival” held at Stone Mountain Park, east of Atlanta, Georgia. I had been there for several years, so I had a lot of interest in my work.
A man from the Atlanta area had purchased several paintings from me and asked me if I would paint a special picture for him. My painting of the Krispy Kreme in Gainesville, Florida had received a huge response, with the police car from Mayberry in it.
The gentleman wanted me to paint one for him, with an Atlanta police car, since I didn’t want to paint the same picture more than once.
The man purchased the painting from me along with 3 others. That show was always one of my favorites, as I had painted many landmarks from the area, including the FOX Theatre Singin’ in the Rain; Fox Theatre, The King & I; The Varsity; a commissioned Varsity painting; the Stone Mountain Grist Mill in the Spring; The Stone Mountain Mill in the Summer. Oh, I forgot to mention the famous Big Chicken in Marietta, Georgia.
Pinto Motel
The Pinto Motel
While exhibiting at an Arts Festival, at the Shrimp Festival, in Gulf Shores, Alabama, I was approached by a young couple that was interested in several paintings to be commissioned. He had seen my work before and brought a photo with him. At this point I did not know that the several paintings would be four of the same picture.
I was handed a black and white photo of the Pinto Motel. It looked like it had been vacant for many years. You know, it was the kind of photograph with the rippled edges, from before I was born. It seems, that their ancestors owned a motel somewhere in the southwest. The owner had passed away many years ago. It was one of the 4 grandchildren that wanted me to paint four paintings, in color, so he could keep one and give the other three as presents to his three siblings. All four of the paintings were 9″ x 12″. I bet it was a treasured gift, since the motel was probably gone by then.
50s Diner
Copyright Larry Johnston
The 50s Diner.
Sarasota, Florida
While we were in Sarasota, Florida, we visited my cousin for few days. Since he is a car collector and exhibits his cars at the car shows in Florida, he was impressed with my Diner paintings. There was a local diner in Sarasota, called the 50s Diner and he asked if I would paint it with a couple of his cars in the painting. All four of the cars shown belonged to him at the time.
This painting added to the classic car inventory of the available prints.

Bonnie Doon Ice Cream 4th Street 1940’s
Bonnie Doon Ice Cream,
Mishawaka, IN
In 1938 Bonnie Doon Ice Cream was established and eventually grew into a local chain of drive-in Ice Cream shops and restaurants. The first business was located on 4th Street, in Mishawaka, Indiana.
I had painted one of the other Bonnie Doon drive-ins, located on S. Michigan St, in South Bend, IN and the painting was on display at local Art show, when a couple approached me to paint the 4th Street Ice Cream Shop. They used to date when they were young and that was their favorite date place. I painted the building as it looked at that time, putting their Studebaker in the painting.
The building was also the factory for making the ice cream for the other stores. It now sits empty, as the store closed a couple of years ago. Only one store remains, which was purchased several years ago. Bonnie Doon eventually entered the local retail market with a variety of flavors.
Here the other Bonnie Doon paintings I have painted: Bonnie Doon, US-31 North, South Bend; Bonnie Doon, S. Michigan St., South Bend; Bonnie Doon on Lincolnway West in Mishawaka; Bonnie Doon on 4th St. Mishawaka in the 1950s.
Rosie’s Diner #2
Rosie’s Diner (2nd Painting)
Rockford, Michigan
While at an art festival, I had my Rosie’s Diner painting on display. One of my customers liked the painting, but wanted his car put into the painting. It was a smaller painting with only his own car highlighted. Rosie’s seemed to be a very busy place for photos of everyone’s favorite car. Here is a link to my first Rosie’s painting. Other Silver Diner paintings that I have done are: Pelican Diner, St Pete Beach, FL; Inside the Silver Diner, Red; Inside the Silver Diner, Pink.

“The Carnival”
While exhibiting at an Art Show near Orlando, Florida over fifteen years ago, I was approached by a lady, who was impressed by my paintings and asked if I would be interested in painting a picture for her. That doesn’t sound so, “out of the ordinary”, but then she gave me the details.
She worked for a company, that has a picnic every year about the same time and needed a painting that represented the event, for their poster. Here’s the deal…..Every year, artists submit a picture for competition and the one that is chosen will receive a cash award. They would keep the painting and print 1000 limited edition prints, from the painting and the artist could keep the overruns.
The same artist had won 3 years in a row. I was shown the paintings that had won previously, some watercolor, others were a pastel, pen and ink and colored pencil and they were all very good. I was given a deadline to present the picture, so they could compare it against the other entries. The winning artist would then make corrections, as needed and return the winning piece. She gave me some photographs of the event from previous years to use as a reference.
After presenting the painting, it was chosen as was, with no changes. I heard later that there was another artist, who was upset because he didn’t win. He was counting on the prize money.
Oliver Ford
Oliver Ford
Plymouth, IN
Oliver Ford, Located in Plymouth, Indiana is one of the commission paintings that I have done over many years. The painting was a gift from the owner’s children. They wanted their new dealership painted and also wanted specific vehicles added to the painting. It was a lot of fun adding vehicles to the painting to make it look realistic.
Wheeling MD House
Wheeling, MD House
Wheeling, Maryland
While exhibiting at the Mountain State Arts and Crafts Festival, in Ripley, West Virginia, a man stopped and asked me about painting the home he grew up in. Since I had done this plenty times before, I told him what was needed to complete the painting. He asked if I would be interested in bartering instead of payment in cash. After finding out that he was a dentist, we decided that I would have some work done every year I returned to the area.
The painting had his whole family outside the home along with the bicycles they had when growing up. I ended up painting another one later of his mother’s homestead for a Christmas present. Here’s the other painting in Kenna, West Virginia.
Oh, by the way, I had my teeth cleaned and whitened, a root canal and a crown, as well a filling. Even Evelyn had her teeth cleaned and whitened. I don’t remember if she had other dental work done, but we didn’t have any insurance at the time, so that was a blessing.
24” x 36” ………. Original Painting is not available.
