The Texaco Pump at Jackson Dairy

Cartersville, Georgia

When I lived in Georgia, I became more involved with Art Festivals around the area in the mid-1980s. While driving down a road outside Cartersville, on Sugar Valley Road, I saw a gas pump that was on a farm, apparently used for the owner’s equipment. These paintings were all variations of the same pump.

This painting was the first in a series of gas pumps I painted during that time.  A few other pumps were Shell, Gulf, Mobile, Marathon and Sinclair.

Billy Neal’s Texaco Station

Cartersville, Georgia

In 1986, during one of my Art Festivals, I had exhibited some of my past work in a photograph book, which included some commission work that I had done.  Billy Neal, a local resident, owned a gas station in Cartersville, GA.  His wife saw a painting of a Texaco gas pump hanging in my booth and purchased it for her husband as a gift.

Since she had seen some of my local paintings that I had done for other people in my book, asked if I would paint a picture of Billy’s Texaco station in Cartersville, GA.,  I was delighted to be able to add another local painting to my photograph book, which led to other commissioned paintings.

White Shoal Light

Lake Michigan

Located in Lake Michigan, the White Shoal Light, built in 1912, is 20 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge, which separates Michigan from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (known as the U. P.).

The light had a range up to 28 miles, with its 124 ft. height and 1.2 million candle power.  The red and white (Candy cane style) stripe is the only one of its kind in the U.S.  Cape Hatteras and St. Augustine both have black and white stripes.

While in Michigan, I painted many local landmarks for the public to recognize, with the White Shoal light being one of them.  I had painted other lighthouses, with 2 of them in Michigan, while the others were along the Florida coast. The painting was in the earlier part of my traveling career, around 1984.

“Sewing Shadows”

Pine Mountain, Georgia

While exhibiting at art shows and festivals around the country, I shared some of my still life artistry, as well as historical and popular places.  One of my still life paintings was of an old-discarded sewing machine.  I found the sewing machine in a junk shop in Pine Mountain, Georgia.  The machine was sitting partially in the shadows, which caused me to name it “Sewing Shadows.”

I eventually painted a set that complimented this painting:  The Lantern, the Wicker Chair and the milk can. They all came from that same junk shop, we found along the road.

“The Lantern”

Pine Mountain, Georgia

While traveling in Central Georgia, we had just finished a show in Pine Mountain, Georgia and as we were driving down the highway, we saw a house that was more than an antique shop.  We called it the junk shop.  It had almost everything you could think of, that was of no value. I took some pictures while I was there and later painted a few of the items.

One of those items was hanging from a nail on the wall. “The lantern” painting became just one of the items that came from that junk shop. “The Corner Shelf”, “Wickers End” and “The Coal Bucket” and the milk can was also highlighted in my paintings.

Amish Acres Restaurant Barn

Nappanee, Indiana

The first outdoor Art Festival I exhibited in was in Nappanee, Indiana, about 30 minutes from where I lived at the time in 1976.  It was an exciting time, as it was held in the apple orchard of a real working Amish Farm.

I exhibited at Amish Acres Arts and Craft Festival for 30 years and made a habit of eating at their Restaurant Barn on the last of the four-day show, before tearing down and packing up my display.  They are famous for their Amish Family-style “Threshers Dinner”.

I painted the Restaurant Barn painting, as well as 3 other places on the grounds.  Other paintings were: The Amish Farm House, The Round Barn Theatre and the Meat and Cheese shop.

At one time, many years ago, Amish Acres Art Festival was in the top 5 art festivals in the Country, I have exhibited and sold my artwork here for more than 30 years.
