Bonnie Doon Drive-in, 1950s
Mishawaka, IN
Bonnie Doon had 5 Drive-in ice cream restaurants in the area. This was the original store where all the ice cream was made and sent to the others. It had a drive-in area as well as inside seating. I painted it to reflect the 1950s era. The ice cream became so popular that the grocery stores in the area were carrying their packaged flavors. I personally loved their banana splits and shakes. Here the other Bonnie Doon paintings I have painted: Bonnie Doon, US-31 North, South Bend; Bonnie Doon, S. Michigan St., South Bend; Bonnie Doon on Lincolnway West in Mishawaka: Bonnie Doon in the 1940s on 4th St in Mishawaka.

J H Butterfields
Bar Harbor, Maine
While we had finished our southern and east coast art tour, we thought we would take a break and take a short vacation. Since we hadn’t seen the states in the New England area, we decided to take a trip to Maine. Along the way, we took a lot of pictures, which I have painted a few of them. I struck gold in Bar Harbor, Maine when I saw J H Butterfield and the Christmas Spirit Shop on the main street of the small village. The Christmas Spirit Shop painting was on the cover of Sunshine Artist magazine for the December issue in 1999. The J H Butterfield store became one of my favorite paintings. You don’t see stores like this anymore. I was fascinated by the history of the store, as it changed to making wreaths in the off season, shipping them all over the country and then catering to the locals and tourism during the peak season.
While at Prater’s Mill Festival in Dalton, Georgia, it was raining quite hard, so I left the painting in the trailer, but I had some prints at my display. A lady from Chattanooga, TN stopped at the booth and fell in love with the print, but asked if I had the original painting. A long story short, I made a trip to the trailer and she purchased the painting.

Luigi’s Pizza,
South Bend, Indiana.
I remember when I was in High school many decades ago, riding my bicycle to Luigi’s Pizza, several miles away, in an area called River Park, for a pizza. Luigi’s is still around, but have moved from the place on the corner. My Aunt, Jean, used to talk about going to Luigi’s when she was in High School. She is now over 90 years old. That’s an indication as to how long they have been making pizzas.
When I painted the painting, I included her driving her favorite car (Ford Retractable) and around the corner is Uncle Don, with his Studebaker (Silver Hawk). When they came to one of my art shows, they saw it for the first time. When they said they loved it, I told them that I painted it for them.
Uncle Don has since passed-away, but the painting still hangs in Aunt Jean’s Family Room where she can see it easily while watching TV or just relaxing.
Corby’s Irish Pub
South Bend, Indiana
The famous inspirational movie “Rudy” was the beginning of this popular South Bend Pub. There was once a popular student hangout located near the Notre Dame campus on Corby Blvd., at the corner of Eddy Street where South Bend Avenue was also a part of the intersection called 5 Points.
The movie “Rudy”, about a young boy with aspirations of growing up and playing football for Notre Dame and the journey that he took to reach his goal.
The movie company chose Corby’s Irish Pub, previously called, The Cap and Cork” to film the bar scenes for the movie. The name of the bar was then changed to Corby’s Irish Pub and has taken the place of the old Corby’s, which was torn down.
The Pub is at the corner of Niles Avenue and LaSalle Avenue, in downtown South Bend, becoming a destination for students, fans and with all the movie memorabilia, a great place for tourists to visit. It is complete with several TVs, to keep up with what is happening in the sports world, as well as other fun activities throughout the establishment, thanks to owner Joe Mittiga.
In the painting, I wanted to capture the feeling and realism of the pub and with the wet sidewalk, street and cars, it gives extra excitement created from the glowing neon signs and lights.
