BBF

Burger Boy Food-O-Rama

Columbus, Ohio

BBF first opened in Columbus, Ohio in 1961 competing with the McDonald’s fast food chain. They eventually opened 48 BBF restaurants in Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky before it was sold in 1970 to Bordon, Inc. The revolving neon Rotospheres on top of their sign always fascinated me and I’m sure it helped attract business. I painted the BBF to accept the sign, as well as the nostalgic history of one of the 15 cent hamburger pioneers.  I also included a few classic cars of the time to add to the nostalgia.

Farm House

Kenna, West Virginia

While exhibiting at the Mountain State Arts & Crafts Festival in Ripley, West Virginia, we met a Dentist who wanted to barter for a painting of his boyhood home. After completing the painting, we also agreed on a painting of his mother’s home in Kenna, West Virginia. In the painting, he also wanted the old classic car you see in the painting. “The Train”

Thurmond, West Virginia

The mountains of Vest Virginia are beautiful, so while in the area, we went picture-taking and ended up in Thurmond, West Virginia.  It was a Coal Town, but I was told it had no roads at one time.  You had to travel by train to get there.  I took many photos of the area and later painted “The Train”.  I made sure to show the low clouds in the mountains along with the beautiful fall colors. In my photos, there was an old oil tanker car sitting on the tracks, so I turned it into an old steam train.

Thurmond was used in a movie in 1987, called “Matewan” about a 1920’s coal mining town, dramatizing “The Battle of the Matewan Coal Strike in 1920”.  It included Actor James Earl Jones.

Thurmond is located, in the New River Gorge.  The 2010 Census shows the town is made up of a total population of 5 people.  There’s not much Real Estate action around there.  The whole town is on the Historic Register.

“The Fire Truck”

Ripley, West Virginia

While traveling around the country exhibiting at hundreds of Art shows and festivals, One of the best in the Country was the Mountain State Arts & Crafts Festival, in Ripley, West Virginia. It was rated #1 in the Country by Sunshine Artist Magazine a number of years ago.

As I returned to this show in July of each year with new paintings, I kept seeing this old fire truck just sitting out in a field.  You might say that it’s days of fighting fires were over and it was put out to pasture. (Pun intended). Eventually, I stopped and took pictures of the truck and painted the acrylic painting on canvas.

Every year since, I sold quite a few prints, especially to the local residents. I was told by the property owners, that the fire truck had been used in parades since its retirement.  That’s where the Stroh’s sign on the truck came from. It was put on after retirement.

Other Fire Department related paintings include:  Fire Dog; Fire Station #2 Hose Reel; Miami Fire Station #6 and Cassopolis Fire Station.
