Amish Acres Restaurant Barn

Nappanee, Indiana

The first outdoor Art Festival I exhibited in was in Nappanee, Indiana, about 30 minutes from where I lived at the time in 1976.  It was an exciting time, as it was held in the apple orchard of a real working Amish Farm.

I exhibited at Amish Acres Arts and Craft Festival for 30 years and made a habit of eating at their Restaurant Barn on the last of the four-day show, before tearing down and packing up my display.  They are famous for their Amish Family-style “Threshers Dinner”.

I painted the Restaurant Barn painting, as well as 3 other places on the grounds.  Other paintings were: The Amish Farm House, The Round Barn Theatre and the Meat and Cheese shop.

Weldy Amish School

Nappanee, Indiana

This Amish school, located just west of Nappanee, Indiana was just a small school with a couple of rooms for teaching and learning.  The old brick school with the steeple bell that used to ring, calling the children to school and after recess in the school yard, which had lots of play equipment for the students to play on.

The school has been replaced by a newer school that could accommodate more students, but not before I was able to take pictures of the school and it’s outdoor equipment and, or course the old hand pump that supplied the water for the school.

I later painted one of the broken swing that had one swing too many.

The Round Barn Theatre

Nappanee, Indiana

Every year, about the first week of August, Amish Acres plays host to the Amish Acres Arts and Crafts Festival, located on the grounds of a working Amish farm.  My first outdoor festival, where I exhibited my artwork was at this show in 1976.  It was located in the apple orchard back then and long before the Round Barn Theatre was a reality. I exhibited at the show 30 times.

I painted several paintings from around Amish Acres, including the Round Barn after it was erected. Other paintings were the Meat and Cheese ShopRestaurant Barn and the Farm House.
