Tilley’s Trolley

Cartersville, Georgia

In 1983, Evelyn and I moved to Georgia from California.  While exhibiting at several art festivals in our new environment, I had a request for a painting of a covered bridge in Bartow County, GA.  On our way to the bridge, we passed through Cartersville and saw, what looked like a permanent carnival, with a Ferris Wheel, Merry-Go-Round, a ride with swings and a refreshment stand.

Several weeks later, I stopped and took some photos.  One of the paintings was of the trolley, with the Ferris Wheel.  The man who owned the rides, was names Tilley, so it became Tilley Park, where he offered the park to organizations to use for fund-raising.

We ended up buying a home in that little town, where we lived for several years.  The cameras back then were not as sharp, so I only was able to show this one photo of the painting.  The Tilley family now owns two of the paintings that I did of their park, which is no longer there. Here is a link to the other painting. Tilley Park Painting.

“The Train”

Thurmond, West Virginia

The mountains of Vest Virginia are beautiful, so while in the area, we went picture-taking and ended up in Thurmond, West Virginia.  It was a Coal Town, but I was told it had no roads at one time.  You had to travel by train to get there.  I took many photos of the area and later painted “The Train”.  I made sure to show the low clouds in the mountains along with the beautiful fall colors. In my photos, there was an old oil tanker car sitting on the tracks, so I turned it into an old steam train.

Thurmond was used in a movie in 1987, called “Matewan” about a 1920’s coal mining town, dramatizing “The Battle of the Matewan Coal Strike in 1920”.  It included Actor James Earl Jones.

Thurmond is located, in the New River Gorge.  The 2010 Census shows the town is made up of a total population of 5 people.  There’s not much Real Estate action around there.  The whole town is on the Historic Register.

Broken Swing

“The Broken Swing”

Although I spent many years traveling around the country with my work and painting many landmarks that only the locals would appreciate, I also did several local Indiana shows. One of them, being Amish Acres, in Nappanee, Indiana.  I exhibited there 30 times since 1976, receiving many awards and watching the festival grow from the apple orchard, (When I started) to the huge festival it has become today.  I did several paintings from this area.

One of them was Weldy School, an Amish School that was located just west of the town.  I was also fascinated in the school yard with the playground equipment they had. I painted the old brick school building, since then been demolished and replaced with a new school.  They had a hand water pump outside the school which I also painted.

The broken swing gained plenty of interest as it tells a subtle story, with the stubby yellow pencil nestled in the grass and the swing hanging by just one chain.

Thrasher Bros. Warehouse

Micanopy, Florida

Micanopy is just south of Gainesville, Florida, just east of the I-75 exit. was founded in 1821.  Most of the buildings in the town are on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.  There are antiques and places to shop in the oldest Florida inland settlement, which is located about 25 minutes south of Gainesville, Florida.  The town has been nicknamed “The little town that time forgot.”

The town has been used for several Hollywood movies, such as “Doc Hollywood” with Michael J. Fox and “Cross Creek” with Mary Steenburgen.

The town had numerous possibilities for nostalgic paintings.  Thrasher Brothers warehouse was an obvious favorite, with the Coca-Cola sign painted on the side of the building.  The warehouse is also the home for the Micanopy Historical Society.

Brewster’s Taxi

Brewster, Mass.

We took some time off from the Festival circuit and drove up the east coast toward our destination in Maine.  As we visited the Cape Cod area, we noticed this unique gas station. They had everything here.

The Exxon station obviously had gasoline, but look at the other signs.  They had Taxi Service, Real Block Ice, Western Union, an old Pepsi chest dispenser, a library and on the far right,  the sign says Brewster’s Micro Mall.

It was pouring out that day, so I had fun taking some photos, but I couldn’t pass this one up.  That’s what I call, more than a convenience store!

From the English Cottage Garden

Wellfield Gardens is such a great place to visit and every year, we see that they have added more trails and opened more areas to see.  After my first visit to Wellfield, I made it a point to include it among my paintings of Elkhart.  The English Cottage is the backdrop for many Wedding photos.

The painting was done in 2014.  I painted it as a moonlit night after a rain. I am now painting some evening scenes and reflections in the rain.  I will be showcasing them in later paintings.

Valley View Plantation

Cartersville, Georgia

When I lived in Georgia, I exhibited in many art shows and festivals in the area.  My focus was to paint local landmarks near where the shows were being held.  The “Roselawn” show, in Cartersville, was my first show in Georgia.

During the Civil War, many plantations were burned, leaving only a few homes from that era.  Valley View was spared, as it was rumored that it was used as a hospital.  The home is 5,160 sq ft on 6,485 acres.

The home was built with Pre-Civil War Architecture and is located west of Cartersville, Georgia. The Plantation home is now being used by the Bartow County Historical Society.

The painting was done in 1985 on stretched canvas.

Superdaug

Chicago, Illinois

One of the few original drive-in restaurants left, this one being a Hot Dog Stand, complete with Car Hop service has been at the intersection of Milwaukee, Devon and Nagle in the Norwood Park section of Chicago.

Years ago, while exhibiting at street fairs in the Chicago area, such as the well known Wells Street Arts Festival, I was asked if I had ever painted Superdaug.  After hearing about the two 12 ft. male and female hot dogs on the roof, with blinking eyes, I had to check it out.

The Hot Dog Stand opened in 1948 and became a popular spot for years to come.  It could have been the crinkle-cut French Fries accompanied by the signature pickled green tomato, or maybe it was the winking and blinking eyes of the two roof icons that may have not only been flirting with each other, but even to the passersby, in need of something to satisfy their hunger cravings.

I eventually added a painting of the Drive-in Hot Dog Stand to my collection. Other Chicago paintings I have done are:  Hot Diggity Dog; Chicago Theatre; Wrigley Field

Although the painting is not from Chicago, my McDonald’s prints were popular.

Prater’s Mill,

Dalton, Georgia

Located in the north Georgia Mountains, Prater’s Mill has held their “Country Fair” for a number of years. It draws many people, not only from Georgia, but from the Chattanooga, TN area as well.

The Country Fair has much to offer, as they have Southern country cooking, Mountain music, Clogging, and other continuous entertainment throughout the festival.  Praters Mill is located on the Coahulla Creek and is a great setting for their craft demonstrations, living history exhibits, and exhibits from the many artists and artisans.

I couldn’t help, but to paint the old Mill. There we even a few people fishing in the creek, while listening to the country music.

Grist Mills have always had a special interest to me, they are fascinating, and brilliant planning for the water to do the hard work!  Here are some grist mills around the Country that I have painted,

Stone Mountain Grist Mill, Spring

Stone Mountain, GA

One of my favorite festivals, was the Yellow Daisy Festival, which I exhibited in for many years.  It was located inside Stone Mountain Park, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, east of Atlanta.  Since I have always been attracted to old places, it was only natural that the Grist Mill in the Park would be the focus of another painting. Evelyn and I rented a row-boat, so I could go out on the lake to take photographs of the mill from the lake side.

The old Grist Mill was originally located in Ellijay, GA which was built in 1869.  It was moved to the park in 1965 and has been one of their featured attractions, great for picnics nearby.
