Pete’s Simonton Lake Tavern

Pete’s Simonton Lake Tavern

Artist Larry Johnston

One of the oldest family operated restaurant-bar combinations in Elkhart, Indiana was Pete’s Simonton Lake Tavern.  Located on the east side of State Road 19 (Cassopolis St.)  Pete’s was open 7 days per week, serving appetizers, Dinners, Baskets, Soups, Salads, Pizza and Sandwiches. Rib-eye and chopped Steaks, Hamburgers, Italian Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken, Chicken wings and several Seafood plates were among the favorites.

Pete’s was a local favorite for years, so I had to capture it in one of my paintings. It is now called “Re-Pete’s” under new ownership as of 2018.

I hope my painting will keep Pete’s image of one Elkhart’s historic places remembered for years to come.

Cappy’s Northside Tavern & Restaurant

Elkhart, IN

Do you love to find a little gem of a restaurant in those out of the way places, where the food is excellent, as well as the friendliness of the staff.  Well, here it is.  Cappy’s is not located on the main street of town or at Restaurant Row.  You can find Cappy’s hidden on the north side of town where all the thriving businesses used to be. Located at 1000 North Michigan Street and Mishawaka St.  in Elkhart, the food and service is always great.  They not only have a great meal, but their bar has several TVs to watch Sports programs while you have a brew and make new friends or just hang out with some old one’s.

Corby’s Irish Pub

South Bend, Indiana

The famous inspirational movie “Rudy” was the beginning of this popular South Bend Pub.  There was once a popular student hangout located near the Notre Dame campus on Corby Blvd., at the corner of Eddy Street where South Bend Avenue was also a part of the intersection called 5 Points.

The movie “Rudy”, about a young boy with aspirations of growing up and playing football for Notre Dame and the journey that he took to reach his goal.

The movie company chose Corby’s Irish Pub, previously called, The Cap and Cork” to film the bar scenes for the movie. The name of the bar was then changed to Corby’s Irish Pub and has taken the place of the old Corby’s, which was torn down.

The Pub is at the corner of Niles Avenue and LaSalle Avenue, in downtown South Bend, becoming a destination for students, fans and with all the movie memorabilia, a great place for tourists to visit.  It is complete with several TVs, to keep up with what is happening in the sports world, as well as other fun activities throughout the establishment, thanks to owner Joe Mittiga.

In the painting, I wanted to capture the feeling and realism of the pub and with the wet sidewalk, street and cars, it  gives extra excitement created from the glowing neon signs and lights.

Judge Roy Bean

Daphne, Alabama

All my paintings, many nostalgic, have some-kind of story, or history behind them. One of many, is my painting “Judge Roy Bean”, which is a building I found, while at the Art Festival in Fairhope, Alabama.

The building, a tavern, restaurant, like none other, was located a couple of miles north in Daphne, Alabama. While at Art shows and Festivals, I would ask locals, what they had in the area that was nostalgic. I received all kinds of answers.  After writing them all down, I took a tour of the area before leaving, taking photos of the places on my list.  The next year, I would return with a painting from their local town, one they can identify with, so they can buy prints of the painting, or even the original painting.

Judge Roy Bean, was a famous Judge, which they named the place after. As you can see, the outside does not have much curb appeal. There were beer bottles on the bench outside, and the place looked abandoned….. I was wrong!

Inside was a bar, with a small stage and quaint places to sit. Then, you stepped down, out another door that lead into a fenced area with gazebos, volleyball courts, and yes, even a place to have concerts. I have been told that Jimmy Buffet and Alabama played there at least once. It was not unusual to see BMW’s, Cadillacs and even Limousines parked outside, when they were open. Since then, the building burned down and as far as I know, it was never rebuilt.
