Juliette Church

Movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”

This is the fourth in my series of painting of buildings that were used in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”.   Juliette, Georgia was used for much of the filming. Both, Church and cemetery, which was next to the church were used.  The cemetery is where there was a jar of honey placed by a head stone near the end of the movie.

Juliette, is located 8 miles east of Forsyth, Georgia, which is along I-75.  We enjoy that 8 mile detour, to stop in Juliette, and grab a bite to eat, along with Fried green tomatoes.  They have several shops and stores to wander through on our visits.  If you want to see the church, you would have to go through the one block town and up the hill to the right about a quarter of a mile. The church is on the left.

Here are links to the other 3 paintings from the town of Juliette. (That is the town of Whistle Stop.) Whistle Stop Cafe, Whistle Stop Depot, Fried Green Tomatoes (Threadgood) House.

Amish Acres Farm House

Nappanee, Indiana

During my life on the road with my paintings, I was subject to many nostalgic places with an opportunity an opportunity to paint. While exhibiting at my first outdoor show, in 1976, at Amish Acres, in Nappanee, Indiana, I took pictures of buildings and farm equipment on the Amish Farm, where they held the show.

One of the pictures, that I later painted was of the old Amish Farm House. Since I photographed my paintings, this painting was photographed over 40 years ago, therefore the quality was not as good as the more recent pictures. Some of the other buildings, I ended up painting, were the Round Barn, now a theatre,  Meat & Cheese Shop and the Restaurant barn.

At one time, many years ago, Amish Acres Art Festival was in the top 5 art festivals in the Country, I have exhibited and sold my artwork here for more than 30 years.

Biff Burger

St. Petersburg, Florida

This painting was of the popular Biff Burger in St. Petersburg, Florida, located on 49th Street.  It still has the original design and is the only one left from the original hundreds of franchised restaurants that disappeared mostly in the 1970s.

Instead of Burgers, Fries and Shakes, they offered many other possibilities, for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. While exhibiting at shows is the area, it was suggested that Biff Burger would make a great local addition to my paintings. It was one of my early paintings of nostalgic cars and diners.

Other St Pete places I have painted are:

Punta Clara Candy Kitchen.

Fairhope, Alabama

One of my favorite Art festivals was in Fairhope, Alabama, as it was one of the best in the country.  Just south of Fairhope, on scenic Highway 98 was a fascinating little house surrounded by a picket fence in Fairhope, Alabama, just north of Point Clear.

In 1952 Dorothy Pacey started her business in the backyard. Now over 60 years later the family owned business continues to produce their variety of Fudges, Pralines, Divinity, Jellies, candies, Jams, Jellies,, Preserves, relishes and cakes.  The whole family joined to produce their recipe book, “The Black Kettle”.

My painting of the Punta Clara Candy Kitchen became a popular item, as I sold individual prints and sets of the area.

Swenson’s Ice Cream and Drive-in

Akron, Ohio

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, I was busy taking photos of old restaurants and diners, to use as a subject for my paintings. Some of them had been around for years and we lived with them on-a-daily- basis, but we never thought that one day they would be gone.

Some of the buildings were torn down literally days after taking pictures of them.  Others were remodeled and new signed installed. What I captured was the memories of the beginnings of many of these businesses.

While exhibiting in Akron, Ohio, I found Swenson’s on Cuyahoga Falls Avenue and took photos of it.  After finishing the painting, the drive-in was remodeled with a canopy to park under while ordering and waiting for your order.

It was popular in North Akron when I was there, serving Hamburgers, French Fries, Malts, Shakes and other great food, that became famous in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Classic Milk Shake

In the years of the roadside Diners, the Hamburger, French Fries and Milk Shake were the order of the day.  In the painting here, it shows a typical Milk Shake, with the silver mixing container that always came with it, because the glass was never big enough to hold it all.  It was like a bonus, being able to drink your milk shake, which was usually topped with whipped cream and a cherry.  The cherry must have fallen off this one.  Of course, there was always that glass of water sitting close by, in case of “Brain Freeze” from drinking the cold shake too fast.  They always came with 2 straws, so you could share with your sweetheart.

Armuchee House

Armuchee, Georgia.

While exhibiting at a show in Cave Springs, Georgia, a couple talked to me about painting a picture of their home.  We made an appointment with them to see the home and take some pictures.  Their home was located north of Rome, Georgia outside of Armuchee, GA.

While being taken on a tour of the home, they brought out a photograph of what the home looked like before it was remodeled.  It was black and white photo of the house back in the early 1900’s.  Since I was interested in nostalgic places, I mentioned that I would like to paint a second picture of what it used to look like.  The didn’t mind, but they were not interested in purchasing it when it was finished.

This is what the finished painting looked like before it was remodeled.  The painting was sold almost immediately.  Actually, it was still on my easel, not quite done, when someone told me they wanted to buy it when it was finished. You’ll notice the date on the painting , 1985 shows that it was painted 35 years ago.

Behind the House

Cartersville, Georgia

I worked with a lady, during the time, when I was teaching myself to paint realism.  She had taken some Art classes and had a big painting hanging in her office of an old barn.  The roof had collapsed and you could see the boards sticking out the top, where the roof had broken.  Next to it was an old brick silo.

I was impressed with the subject she had chosen, so I took my camera and scoured the countryside around northern Indiana, expecting to find old fallen down barns everywhere.  For 2 days, I drove around and only found nicely painted red barns, white barns, but very few weathered barns.  Even the houses had been kept up.

So when we moved to Georgia, there were old houses, old barns, outhouses and even old weathered farms. I took lots of pictures, so when I was asked to teach a painting class, at an art supply store, that was my first project. The first painting was of a shed that was located behind the main house on a property.

I called the painting “Behind the House”.  I learned that teaching a 4-week painting was a mistake, since the students missed weeks along the way, that they had paid for. We eventually got through it, but all my classes after that were quick 2-hour paintings, that they could finish the same day.

Coconut Palm Tree

Islamorada, Florida

I exhibited my paintings throughout most of Florida during the cold months in Indiana.  I guess you might call me a “Wandering Snowbird”.  One of the places where I exhibited many times, was in Islamorada, Florida, located in the Florida Keys.

It was a beautiful day, as we arrived a day early and parked our motor home in a grassy area provided for us nearby.  I took many pictures wherever I went and as I laid on my back in the grass, looking up I could see the coconuts way up in a coconut tree.  The view from there became transformed to canvas as I recreated that view.  The coconut tree became a Florida favorite.
