While in the Gulf Region, I exhibited in several Art Festivals in Alabama, such as the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival, in Gulf Shores, Alabama. So, what better than to paint a painting of a Shrimp Boat. We spent several days taking pictures of old fishing related scenes and buildings. It was the end of the day, when all the Shrimp Boats returned with their catch, when I spotted this boat sitting along the channel in Bon Secure, Alabama. If you’re wondering, it didn’t have “Jenny” painted on it! The painting was done several years before the movie, Forest Gump was released. Who knows, it could have been the boat they used for the movie.

All my paintings, many nostalgic, have some-kind of story, or history behind them. One of many, is my painting “Judge Roy Bean”, which is a building I found, while at the Art Festival in Fairhope, Alabama.
The building, a tavern, restaurant, like none other, was located a couple of miles north in Daphne, Alabama. While at Art shows and Festivals, I would ask locals, what they had in the area that was nostalgic. I received all kinds of answers. After writing them all down, I took a tour of the area before leaving, taking photos of the places on my list. The next year, I would return with a painting from their local town, one they can identify with, so they can buy prints of the painting, or even the original painting.
Judge Roy Bean, was a famous Judge, which they named the place after. As you can see, the outside does not have much curb appeal. There were beer bottles on the bench outside, and the place looked abandoned….. I was wrong!
Inside was a bar, with a small stage and quaint places to sit. Then, you stepped down, out another door that lead into a fenced area with gazebos, volleyball courts, and yes, even a place to have concerts. I have been told that Jimmy Buffet and Alabama played there at least once. It was not unusual to see BMW’s, Cadillacs and even Limousines parked outside, when they were open. Since then, the building burned down and as far as I know, it was never rebuilt.

One of my favorite Art festivals was in Fairhope, Alabama, as it was one of the best in the country. Just south of Fairhope, on scenic Highway 98 was a fascinating little house surrounded by a picket fence in Fairhope, Alabama, just north of Point Clear.
In 1952 Dorothy Pacey started her business in the backyard. Now over 60 years later the family owned business continues to produce their variety of Fudges, Pralines, Divinity, Jellies, candies, Jams, Jellies,, Preserves, relishes and cakes. The whole family joined to produce their recipe book, “The Black Kettle”.
My painting of the Punta Clara Candy Kitchen became a popular item, as I sold individual prints and sets of the area.
