Euharlee Covered Bridge (Autumn)

Euharlee, Georgia

In 1983, while doing an art show in Georgia, I was asked if I would paint a picture of a covered bridge right next to some vacant property, where a man was going to build a home.  Evelyn and I were brand new to the area, straight from Orange County, California.

We took off toward Euharlee, where the bridge was located.  He also told us that it was called Euharlee, because it was out in the country where “you harlee” ever see anyone. Not knowing the dress code in north Georgia yet, he showed us the bridge and then walked his property, through the stickers and briers toward the Euharlee Creek, which ran next to his property.

I told you all that, to tell you this.  We both had on dress clothes and mohair sweaters, which was popular during that era (In California!!!!!!).  It took forever to remove all the burs from the sweaters.  I believe we put them in storage after that experience.

After the painting was finished, I painted another view of the bridge and was able to display it in a festival, in which won 3rd place. Not bad for starting out in the area.

I later was commissioned by a lady from Powder Springs, GA, to paint the same bridge with a different view. The first painting was in the fall and the second one was in the Spring. Click HERE to see the second painting.

Below are photos of our covered bridge sets, we sold when on the road. They were matted and framed photo prints.

The Varsity #2

Atlanta, Georgia

The first Painting of the Varsity, in Atlanta, was so popular, that I had a couple approach me and commissioned me to paint their” his and her” cars in a Varsity picture.  Hers was the Camero. I was participating in quite a few festivals and art shows in the Atlanta, GA area during that time, so the Varsity prints were very popular.

Krispy Kreme

Atlanta, GA

I exhibited at one of the largest and highest rated Festivals in the nation, “The Yellow Daisy Arts & Craft Festival” held at Stone Mountain Park, east of Atlanta, Georgia.  I had been there for several years, so I had a lot of interest in my work.

A man from the Atlanta area had purchased several paintings from me and asked me if I would paint a special picture for him.  My painting of the Krispy Kreme in Gainesville, Florida had received a huge response, with the police car from Mayberry in it.

The gentleman wanted me to paint one for him, with an Atlanta police car, since I didn’t want to paint the same picture more than once.

The man purchased the painting from me along with 3 others. That show was always one of my favorites, as I had painted many landmarks from the area, including  the FOX Theatre Singin’ in the Rain Fox Theatre, The King & I The Varsity;   a commissioned Varsity painting;  the Stone Mountain Grist Mill in the Spring;  The Stone Mountain Mill in the Summer.  Oh, I forgot to mention the famous Big Chicken in Marietta, Georgia.

“The Varsity”

Atlanta, GA.

The first thing you hear when you arrive at the Varsity are the words, “What’ll ya have?” If you don’t know about the varsity, I need to bring you up to date.  The date was 1928, when the varsity was opened, just a couple of blocks from Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, GA.  It has become to be the World’s Largest Drive-in Restaurant. It can accommodate 600 cars and 800 people inside.

I have heard the drive-in restaurant serves 2 miles of Hot Dogs, a ton of Onions, 2500 pounds of Potatoes, 5000 Fried Pies and 300 gallons of Chili, made from scratch daily. That’s a lot of food they would have to have ready!

So, you see why I had to paint this painting.  Of course, I had to include a well-known classic car to add to the picture, as if the Varsity needed to have anything added.  By the way, the chili cheese dogs are outstanding!  So, if you’re heading south on I-75 through downtown Atlanta, the Varsity will be on your left side.

“Piano Through a Window”

Somewhere in Georgia

While traveling around the country, I was always on the lookout for places and things of nostalgia.  One Sunday afternoon, while driving down a 2-lane road in west-central Georgia, between Atlanta and Macon, we passed through a community which may have been too small to call a town, but it was the community of Concord, Georgia. They had a building, with a row of stores on the north side of the road.  In the R.F. Strickland Building, was an antique shop, so we stopped, camera in hand.  It was obvious they were closed because there were no cars in sight and no people.  As I peered in the windows, I saw several old things that would interest me.  One was an old carousel horse and another, an upright old piano covered with dust.

I took pictures of both items, but since they were closed, I shot them through the window, hence the painting is called “Piano through a Window”.

River Street

Savannah, Georgia

While living in north Georgia in the 1980’s, one of my favorite Art shows that I attended, was in South Georgia on River Street in Savannah.  The show was along the edge of the River, opposite all the shops and restaurants.  The street was still cobblestone as it was decades ago.  The buildings used to be warehouses, convenient for the shipping trade.

The painting is of one of the typical buildings made from stone and rock, at the north end of the street. The wrought iron stairs added to the historic ambiance. The rail tracks still run along the middle of the street, giving the area a nostalgic look of the early trade and transportation in Savannah. It was one of several paintings that represented my experiences in Savannah, GA.

We saw many boats and ships that docked next to us during the years we attended.  One year, a Navy destroyer stopped for the weekend.  Another was a tall ship, that looked like it was a pirate ship of the past.

“The Corner Shelf”

Pine Mountain, Georgia

While looking for some antique items for subject material for paintings, we stopped at a broken down old farm house along the road, we called the junk shop, because there was not much in the way of valuable antiques there..  The sign painted on an old piece of wood which said, “Antiques”.  The shop was located along a 2-lane road on central Georgia near the town of Pine Mountain.

There was nobody around as we walked around the outside of the building.  As we were behind the home, a car drove up, and it was the owner of the property.  As usual, the southern folks were as friendly and hospitable.  I told him what our intentions were, that we intended not to buy anything, just shoot pictures of a few of the items he had laying around.  He proceeded to give us a tour of the inside, showing us things that he thought we would be interested in.

After shooting the photos, we said our goodbye’s and we were on our way to the next art show. I painted several paintings from that junk shop.  I call my set “Items”, which includes, the “Milk Can“, “The Lantern“, “Wickers End” (which is a broken down cane chair on the back porch) and of course this painting called the “Corner Shelf”. Sometimes I add another painting called “”The Broken Swing”.

Many times, I will add something extra in my paintings.  “Corner Shelf” is no exception. I put a couple of my artists brushes in the jar near the back of the painting.
